As a reward for winning the 2021 Superbike World Championship, Toprak Razgatlioglu was given the opportunity to test the MotoGP Yamaha for a day at MotorLand Aragón today, Tuesday. The Turk was very impressed!
Toprak Razgatlioglu’s MotoGP test was highly anticipated as it is more than a gift for Yamaha’s first World Superbike title since Ben Spies in 2009.
Yamaha wanted to see how quickly the 19-time Superbike winner adapted to the prototype bike. The Turk, on the other hand, wanted to find out whether driving such a motorcycle would be fun for him. And fans of both world championships are waiting for a sign of which series the artist from Sakarya will be drawn to in the medium term. You have to know that no other superbike rider is followed as closely in the MotoGP paddock as the current world champion.
«It was my first time on the Yamaha M1. The MotoGP bike felt completely different than my R1. More power, different electronics, the seamless gearbox… it was all completely new to me,” said Razgatlioglu. “I learned more with every lap because it’s not that easy to get used to the MotoGP bike. The bike feels good, especially on the straights where it’s very fast, and the carbon brakes are interesting.”
Michelin tires were also new for Razgatlioglu.
Razgatlioglu was not on his own during the test, test driver Cal Crutchlow was at his side with advice and action during his 40 laps.
“Fortunately, because he was able to help me a lot,” Razgatlioglu thanked the Englishman. “Conditions were really hot so after the first run of twelve laps we limited ourselves to five or six laps to get a first feel for the bike. When I watch Aragon MotoGP on TV, I could see that it was a bit bumpy and I could feel it. But it’s not that bad, you just have to keep your foot on the gas while navigating the bumps. If you let go of the gas, the bike becomes more unstable.”
The weather was mixed in Aragón on Tuesday. It was hot all day, but in the afternoon it rained heavily for a short time.
“All in all, it was a very positive test, even though I was able to drive less than I wanted because of the rain,” concluded Razgatlioglu. «It was really fun to drive the MotoGP Yamaha. Thanks for the Opportunity.”
No lap times were communicated by Yamaha, according to reports Toprak was close to Crutchlow to within a few tenths of a second.
MotoGP fans now wishing for his move from Razgatlioglu to the premier class will have to be patient. Because Razgatlioglu will also compete for Yamaha in the Superbike World Championship in 2023, because he and his manager Kenan Sofuoglu agreed from the start: the champion will not compete in a customer team in the MotoGP World Championship. And next year the factory team will be made up of Fabio Quartararo and Franco Morbidelli.
