Independent developer Free Range Games and publisher North Beach Games today released The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria, the only survival crafting video game set in the Fourth Age of Middle-earth, the fantasy world created by JRR Tolkien. Launched as part of the Epic Games Summer Showcase at Summer Game Fest, The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria follows the dwarves of Middle-earth as they embark on an original adventure to reclaim and restore their dwarven homeland of Moria. The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria will be available exclusively for PC via the Epic Games Store in Spring 2023. Players interested in securing their part in the adventure can add the game to their wishlist starting today.
“We are so excited for the return of the dwarves to Khazad-dûm! Thanks to our friends at North Beach Games and Free Range Games, we’ll be diving deep into the Misty Mountains together by this time next year. We hope you will be there!” exclaimed Fredrica Drotos of Middle-earth enthusiastically.
The story of The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria takes players beyond the books into the fourth age of Middle-earth, the fantastical world created by JRR Tolkien. Summoned to the Misty Mountains by Lord Gimli Lockbearer, players take control of a band of dwarves tasked with retrieving lost loot from the dwarven homeland of Moria – known as Khazad-dûm, or Dwarrowdelf – in the depths beneath their feet. Searching for the treasures in the mines of Moria will take a lot of courage. Players will band together to survive, craft, build and explore the iconic sprawling mines. Courageous expedition members must be vigilant, because mysterious dangers lurk.
“We at Free Range Games are absolutely thrilled to finally release The Lord of the Rings Revealed: Return to Moria,” said Chris Scholz, CEO of Free Range Games. “We care deeply about JRR Tolkien and all his creations in Middle-earth, and this project is a great opportunity to create new experiences that emerge from one of the greatest stories of all time. We put a lot of passion into the game to give players an unforgettable experience.”
The game offers endless experiences through a procedurally generated dwarven kingdom of Moria, so no two adventures are the same, and each expedition can be completed either solo or online with companions. Players can mine to craft better gear and resources, but beware, mining makes noise, and the noise made in the silent depths threatens to awaken the dangers below: where there is clatter, there is fighting. Explore the secrets of three legendary mountains, mine precious metals, fight for survival and fight unspeakable forces to unravel the mystery of the shadow that lurks within.
Feel the Fellowship: Experience the Fellowship of the Dwarves like never before, with the rich story of JRR Tolkien’s iconic fantasy world woven into the fabric of The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria.
Survive the Darkness: To survive in the treacherous mines of Moria, players must conserve resources, hunt and gather food, and control their sleep, temperature, and noise levels. Use dynamic lighting systems to protect yourself and blaze a trail in the dark. Battle unspeakable evils and survive hordes of monstrous orcs as you unravel the mystery of the shadow lurking within the mountain.
Base Build: Find solace in the dark. Discover and clear new locations to create architecture on a grand scale. Get creative and build bases from scratch or build on top of the existing environment. Beware of the evils who want to destroy the progress of the dwarves.
The game is currently in development, with more news and announcements to come in the coming months. For more information about The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria, visit ReturnToMoria.com, the Discord community, and on Twitter, Tik Tok, and YouTube.
