We take a look into the crystal ball and round up rumors about new Nikon cameras and lenses due to be released by the end of 2022.
Nikon innovations in the second half of 2022
Nikon has launched two new Z lenses so far in 2022, the record-breaking Nikon Z 400mm f/2.8 and the amazingly light and affordable Nikon Z 800mm f/6.3. The company has not yet unveiled any new cameras in the current calendar year – no wonder, after all, Nikon is still not able to keep up with the production of the Z9. However, rumors are currently growing louder that Nikon two new cameras in 2022 want to present. We take this as an opportunity for a small preview and a look into the crystal ball.
The timely presentation of a new APS-C camera with Z bayonet is currently considered very likely. The new camera will probably be called the Z30 and will be in the entry-level class. It is rumored that the DSLM could be revealed in June or July 2022, but whether that will come true in the end we’ll have to wait and see.

Nikon Z4, Z5 II, Z6 III, Z8 or Z70?
There is still a big question mark behind the second camera innovation, which is supposed to be released in 2022. The Nikonrumors website has received several alerts and conflicting information over the past few weeks. Let’s go through all the options one by one.
Nikon Z4 or Nikon Z5 II: Theoretically, Nikon could plan a new affordable full-frame camera for beginners, but that’s not really likely. Several manufacturers seem to have switched to the strategy of wanting to cover the entry-level and mid-range range with APS-C cameras. A Z4 would not really fit into the picture.
Nikon Z6 III: The Nikon Z6 II is not outdated yet, but Nikon should be interested in keeping the important all-round model up to date. A Nikon Z6 III with more than 30 megapixels would be conceivable.
Nikon Z8: Nikon already has a high-resolution camera on offer, the Nikon Z7 II. If the manufacturer is really working on a Z8, then differences to the Z7 series would have to be created. We therefore think it is possible that Nikon – like Canon – is working on a camera with a significantly higher resolution in the range of 100 megapixels. Such a camera could come onto the market under the name Z8, but whether that will still be the case in 2022 is questionable. Canon plans to present the high-megapixel camera in the first half of 2023.
Nikon Z70: Nikonrumors has not received any information about a Z70, but we would still like to include the camera in this list purely as a speculation. 2022 is already the year of the APS-C format, so we think it is at least conceivable that Nikon would like to launch its own camera in the style of the Canon EOS R7 or Fuji X-H2s.
New Z lenses
Finally, let’s take a look at possible innovations in the field of lenses. The next thing Nikon seems to be launching is a compact Z 400mm f/4.5, and this is also expected to come later this year Z 85mm (probably with f/1.2) and that Z 600mm (probably with f/4) will be presented. Both focal lengths are already known from Nikon’s official roadmap.
The following focal lengths can also be found on the roadmap (as of October 2021):
- Compact 26mm
- 24mm DX (for APS-C)
- 12-28mm DX (for APS-C)
