new York Netflix’s hit production is entering its fourth season. Stranger Things comes in two shipments with episodes up to two and a half hours long. Was the wait for the new episodes worth it?
Netflix is shrinking, “Stranger Things” is rampant. This is how you can get the start of the new season of series on the streaming service in a nutshell. In late April, the company reported a drop in its customer base for the first time in more than a decade. The annual report registered 200,000 fewer subscribers than at the end of last year, which caused the share to collapse by 26 percent.
The managers should be all the happier that one of the most successful productions of the house is being continued. The fourth season of Stranger Things could increase the audience, that’s the hope, in any case it will affect the “minutes spent watching” statistic: The shortest episode lasts 65 minutes, the season finale will last over two and a half hours.
The series, which won seven Emmys, began in 2016 and the third season is said to have been viewed by 67 million users in the first 28 days of 2019 and streamed 582 million hours. The charm of Stranger Things was that the series worked with nostalgic references to the big summer movies of the 1980s, sprinkled pop culture codes into the plot, and felt atmospherically and visually like you’d stepped into the DVD bonus material of classics like ” ET” or “Stand By Me”. The long-missing Winona Ryder celebrated a brilliant comeback as a mother on the verge of a nervous breakdown, and the joy of meeting the familiar again increased all the more when one realized that this was not just about copying, but about creating new things. Stranger Things was set in the small town of Hawkins, Indiana, and that’s where the abyss opened up into the parallel world, Upside Down, from which monsters like the Demogorgon and Mind Flayer tried to attack.
The fourth season continues the principle, but takes on so much that you can easily feel overwhelmed. Students put “Dance the Devil” posters on their room walls, they wear Reebok and Vans shoes, and “Freddy Krueger” actor Robert Englund makes an appearance. The plot threads diverge widely, they purr through California, Utah, Alaska and as far as Russia, and the arsenal of characters is as monumental as in “Ben Hur”. Some narrative threads remain rather pale, but you have to spend a lot of time with them, and when you finally get back to the interesting sequence of scenes, you sometimes don’t even remember what exactly happened last.
Without wanting to give too much away, it is implied that there will be a reunion with Hopper. That a serial killer is taking on an important role. That Eleven has to go without her super powers. That Joyce received a package with a creepy doll and an unexpected message. And that it’s going to be as bloody as seldom before.
The series has entered its trauma recovery phase, spiders crawling out of grandfather clocks ticking in trees; Limbs are twisted and voices are distorted. The action takes place six months after the end of the third season. And the first eight minutes of the opening episode alone are extreme, more “Hellraiser” than “Stand By Me”. Netflix will deliver the first seven episodes on May 27th. Two more episodes of 85 and 150 minutes will follow on July 1st.
Behind the enormously popular Netflix brand “Stranger Things” are the 38-year-old twin brothers Matt and Ross Duffer, and they had to interrupt filming because of Corona. They have called the new season “the biggest” and “toughest ever,” and while they may have coined “tough” in terms of production, the same goes for the plot. Maybe that’s how it has to be, their creation is gradually increasing to the last bloom, the fifth season should be the last, they announced.
What made Stranger Things great was that characters who initially seemed like archetypes grew into characters and grew to love them like real people, at least for the duration of an episode. It was the small and quiet scenes that made you come back again and again. And fortunately it has stayed that way. In the first episode of the new season, Max walks the hallways of her school, the music from her Walkman headphones slowing everything down; it feels a bit like under water, and that alone is enough.
