Boris Becker has been in prison for a week now. The notorious Wandswoth Prison has stood in the South London Borough of Wandsworth since 1851. It is the second largest prison in England with a capacity of 1416 inmates. The prison has a reputation for being tough and unyielding, and its guards are known for being particularly tough. Wikileaks founder Julien Assange and supermodel Kate Moss’ ex, Pete Doherty, served their time here – and now tennis legend Becker too.

Boris Becker’s everyday life in prison

The ex-athlete was allowed to receive visitors in his first week of imprisonment. It’s unusual for the Wandsworth to allow inmates to have visitors so early. Because these are thoroughly examined here before arrival – and that can sometimes take several weeks. But Becker’s girlfriend Lilian de Carvalho Monteiro was already in the prison. She reported that Becker is doing well given the circumstances. But the British newspaper “The Sun” now reveals an insider what makes life really difficult for the 54-year-old behind bars.

According to the source, what he struggles with in prison is the menu:

“He’s going through a tough time and the worst thing of all is the food. He can’t believe how bad it is and how small the portions are. One of his first meals was corned beef, which wasn’t good.”

That’s why the sports icon uses the equivalent of almost 12 euros pocket money per week to upgrade the menu with chocolate, biscuits and bananas from the canteen, according to the insider.

Becker can at least influence the snacks somewhat, but not the lack of hygiene on site. The many smells and the noise of the more than a thousand prisoners are said to bother him and ensure poor sleep in the six square meter cell with hardly any natural light, the informant continues. In addition, he reports:

“The conditions are miserable, almost inhuman. It can get cold in the cells and there is hardly any daylight”

Boris Becker is now sitting in Wandsworth for the next two and a half years because of delaying insolvency. He actually has to spend at least half of it in prison, only then does he have the chance to get out on probation for the rest of the time. But until then he will have to put up with mediocre corned beef and annoying roommates.
