Live in the ticker: Angelique Kerber against Anastasia Gasanova – the start of the WTA tournament in Bad Homburg

Angelique Kerber starts the WTA tournament in Bad Homburg against the 23-year-old Russian Anastasia Gasanova. The game scheduled for Monday evening had to be interrupted due to the slippery grass on Center Court when the Kieler was 4-2 in the first set.

The two players will play the second game on Center Court on Tuesday and will therefore not start before 1:00 p.m.

For the three-time Grand Slam winner it is the first meeting with number 140 in the world rankings. The 34-year-old goes into the tournament as the defending champion. Last year she won the final 6-3, 6-2 against Katerina Siniakova.

9:15 p.m. – Goodbye

I say goodbye to you for today and wish you a nice evening. You can follow the continuation of the match between Kerber and Gasanova tomorrow, Tuesday, live on Eurosport, Joyn PLUS+ and again in the live ticker here at Eurosport.de. The two players will play the second game on Center Court and will therefore not start before 1 p.m. Goodbye!

9:10 p.m. – Gasanova – Kerber 2: 4 – demolition in Bad Homburg

The game is canceled! Chair umpire Bacchi steps onto the lawn and sees for himself how wet the pitch is. Kerber agrees with her opponent that it’s too slippery. After a short deliberation, the referee finally decides to abandon the game. The opening match will therefore be continued on Tuesday.

9:09 p.m. – Gasanova – Kerber 2:4

However, the break does not really give Kerber security. After a cracking return winner from Gasanova and an unforced error from the Germans, the 23-year-old gets an immediate chance for the rebreak (30:40), which Kerber can fend off with a forehand winner. Shortly afterwards it’s breakball Gasanova again – this time Kerber counters with an ace. In the decisive phase, the 34-year-old serves very concentrated and confirms the break with a lot of effort. Gasanova, on the other hand, repeatedly complained to chair umpire Pierre Bacchi that the grass was too slippery. The Russian had previously complained that it was too dark.

21:00 – Gasanova – Kerber 2:3

Gasanova wobbles noticeably with her own service: The qualifier makes three (!) double mistakes and gives Kerber the next break opportunity, which the three-time Grand Slam winner uses thanks to another unforced error from Gasanova – 3: 2 for the defending champion.

8:56 p.m. – Gasanova – Kerber 2: 2

Now it is Kerber who shakes for the first time on his own serve: Gasanova has been quite carefree so far and makes a debut after a powerful forehand. This time, however, it’s Kerber who keeps his nerve, serves confidently and ultimately equalizes to 2: 2 – everything in the row.

8:49 p.m. – Gasanova – Kerber 2: 1

After slight initial difficulties, the player from Kiel is finally in the game and, after an outstanding forehand winner, puts the line down to 30:15 on Gasanova’s serve. The Russian then becomes a bit too wild in her punches and thus gives Kerber the first two break chances (15:40). However, the 23-year-old can now rely on her serve, then hits two aces and pulls her head out of the noose for now.

However, Kerber remains on the trigger, forces Gasanova to make mistakes and immediately gets the next break opportunity. In the decisive moments, however, the outsider stays cool again and, with a little delay, still seals the 2-1 lead.

8:43 p.m. – Gasanova – Kerber 1: 1

The German number one also has a strong start to their first service game and takes the quick 40-0 lead. Gasanova fought back with a nice return winner, but Kerber then secured her first game win with a winner worth seeing.

8:39 p.m. – Gasanova – Kerber 1-0

Sparkling clean start for Gasanova: The 23-year-old starts the game with an ace and continues to serve with great concentration. The number 140 in the world rankings gets through her service game to zero.

INFO – Gasanova – Kerber

Due to an interim rain interruption, Gasanova and Kerber now have to put in a late shift. In a few moments, the Russian will open the match.
