Gurman: iOS 16 with a new lock screen, macOS with a completely overhauled system settings, new Messages app and more
Written by insideindyhomes

A week before Apple’s developer conference WWDC, Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman once again deals in detail with the expected software innovations in his “Power On” newsletter. In his view, the upcoming updates are “quite significant”. In fact, some of the indications of the past few weeks seem to be confirmed: Apple is actually working on a powerful window management for the iPad and an always-on display for the iPhone 14 Pro (Max). There seems to be a lot to do with the other operating systems as well, although the company is not using the full potential of the health app.

iPhone and iPad with new lock screen, always-on function in implementation
The lock screen on the iPhone and iPad doesn’t exactly have the reputation of reflecting Apple’s innovative strength: the configuration options are very limited, the shortcuts are limited to activating the camera and the flashlight function. According to Gurman, the group wants to make “major improvements” to the lock screen: Apple is working on background images for the lock screen, which have functions similar to widgets. Furthermore, iOS 16 lays the foundation for an always-on display. The implementation may not be long in coming: According to Ross Young, CEO of Display Supply Chain Consultants, the feature will probably be introduced in the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max (see here).

In addition, there have recently been indications of a more sophisticated multitasking mode for the iPad, in order to possibly freely position multiple windows on the screen. Gurman also expects significant changes in this matter.

macOS 13: Revised system settings
Not much has been leaked about macOS 13 so far, according to the leaker Majin Bu, the upcoming version will involve significant changes to Time Machine. Backups for the Mac could also be integrated into the iCloud for the first time. Gurman doesn’t go into this, but points to a completely overhauled system settings app that should be more oriented towards iOS. In the future, the user will be able to make specific configurations for individual applications. Other default apps would also get a new design.

watchOS 9 with improved navigation, news app moves closer to social networks
The journalist remains a bit vague about watchOS 9 and tvOS 16: Thanks to the software upgrade, the Apple Watch will receive significant improvements in everyday life and for navigation. The operating system for the Apple TV ensures a better connection to smart home features.

The company is continuing to expand the features of the news app so that it becomes more similar to a social network – this applies above all to voice messages. The information about the health app is double-edged: many new features are on the way, but the application will continue to be reserved for iPhone users only. Gurman does not expect the app to be integrated into iPadOS 16 or macOS 13.
