Google TV & Android TV: These are the innovations with Android 13
Written by insideindyhomes

Google has already chatted a lot about Android and the upcoming update to Android 13 as part of the Google I/O. The focus is on: the merging of the various devices into an ecosystem and an adapted Android for the big screen – because you want to pick up speed again in the tablet market. Now Google is coming out with information about Android Auto, but also about Google TV and Android TV.

Google TV and Android TV supply the largest screens with an operating system – including various projectors in addition to TV sets. There are now over 110 million monthly Android TV devices, including many with the Google TV interface. When it comes to apps, the company is also very well positioned. They not only cover the standard streaming services, but also offer more than 10,000 apps for TVs – and the trend is rising. We want to continue to build on that. In the course of Android 13, more features and tools will be added. A first beta for Android TV 13 is now available for download. In addition to performance and quality, the focus here is on accessibility and multitasking.

Logical: Android 13 brings new interfaces / APIs. The fact that the user would like to be better assisted when making settings sounds useful. For example, the AudioManager communicates which playback mode is available. This is how Android TV can react – also to HDMI states. Content is then paused, for example, and electricity is saved.

Something is also happening on the accessibility front. You add an interface (InputDevice-API) for different keyboard layouts. Game developers can then reference keys by physical location, supporting different physical keyboard layouts. A system-wide option also allows audio descriptions to be played to the user in all apps.

Another point: multitasking. The main thing is that such an Android TV device is not usually used exclusively for consuming content. The picture-in-picture support has therefore been revised. For example, to make video calls in PiP mode with several people and to avoid overlapping content.
