Bora dominates stage 14 of the Giro with an offensive
The stage with its two laps over the climbs to Superga and Colle della Maddalena turned into a memorable exchange of blows and was driven almost like a one-day race: Team Bora-hansgrohe went on the offensive 85 kilometers before the finish and increased the field so massively with full team strength the pace that driver after driver lost touch and early on only twelve favorites were leading the race, including the Bora trio Emanuel Buchmann, Jai Hindley and Wilco Kelderman.
When the Dutchman swerved on the penultimate climb after a long period of speed work, the attacks began – first Hindley and Buchmann each dared to do it, later Carapaz temporarily broke away as a soloist. Juan Pedro Lopez in the pink jersey finally fell behind.
On the way to the last of the five mountain classifications, Richard Carapaz, Simon Yates, Jai Hindley and Vincenzo Nibali were at the top together, and shortly before the summit the Brit launched the decisive attack.
Giro-Aus for Dumoulin
The Bora team was rewarded for the outstanding performance by jumping back to the top position in the team classification, the Italian Diego Rosa extended his lead in the mountains classification.
The race had to be abandoned on Saturday by ex-winner Tom Dumoulin, the Dutchman from the Jmbo-Visma team left the Giro ailing on this 14th stage. Alexander Krieger (Alpecin), Cees Bol (DSM) and Giacomo Nizzolo (Israel) did not start in Santena.
On Sunday, the 15th stage of the Giro d’Italia leads to the next mountain finish in Cogne, a section with three difficult, long mountains. After that, on Monday, the third rest day of the Tour of Italy offers an opportunity to relax.
