According to the Leipzig Regional Court, the musician Gil Ofarim has not yet commented on the allegations against him after visiting a Leipzig hotel. The court had given him a deadline until Monday in which it initially did not decide whether to admit the indictment, a spokeswoman said on Tuesday.
“He can continue to get involved in the allegations. From now on, however, the court could announce at any time whether the prosecution would allow it.” It could still take a while before the court made a decision. It also depends on the workload of the court and other ongoing proceedings. There are no specific deadlines.

The Leipzig public prosecutor has accused Ofarim of defamation and false suspicion. The musician had made allegations of anti-Semitism against a Leipzig hotel in a viral video last October. According to the public prosecutor’s office, the incident did not happen as described.
Ofarim sticks to his presentation
According to his lawyer, Ofarim is sticking to his account. “You can assume that,” said lawyer Markus Hennig to the NDR media magazine “Zapp” in an article published last week when asked whether Ofarim would stick with his version of the incident.
The process can now continue in this way
There are several options for further proceedings: the competent chamber of the district court can approve the indictment in its entirety, it can approve it with changes, or it can not approve it. Another option is that the charges are admitted, but the proceedings are opened before the district court. The case would actually belong there in terms of the sentence. However, because of the special importance and public impact of the case, the public prosecutor’s office had decided to bring charges to the district court.

An emotionally charged debate with a twist
At first, many observers saw Gil Ofarim’s description as an example of an anti-Semitic incident. Felix Klein, the Federal Government Commissioner for the fight against anti-Semitism, together with several politicians, also showed solidarity with the artist, who claimed in October 2021 to have received anti-Semitic hostility from an employee of the Leipzig “Westin” hotel.
Ofarim was asked to hide his Star of David necklace in order to check into the hotel. The accused hotel employee was exposed to numerous hostilities on the Internet.
But then doubts about the representation of Ofarim were voiced. The necklace cannot be seen on surveillance camera images and it is therefore currently questionable whether the incident occurred as described. (with dpa)
