Pop legend George Michael (“Last Christmas”) died in 2016 at the age of 53. On Christmas of all days, December 25th. Now, more than five years after the death of the Wham! legend, a new book unveils shocking details.

George Michael’s final years were reportedly marked by a harrowing descent into illegal substances, particularly the “rape drug” GHB. His last years? The purest self-destruction.

After the singer ended his 25th live tour in 2008, he is said to have lived “in the fog”. Meaning: “He slept until the afternoon, staying high on pot almost every waking moment”. Author James Gavin writes in the biography “George Michael: A Life”, which will be published at the end of June.

In September 2008, the Wham! frontman was spotted by police in an underground men’s toilet on Hampstead Heath Park in London. He had been there waiting for men for quick sex. When the cops searched him, they found marijuana and crack cocaine, arrested the pop star. In 2009, George Michael confirmed this incident.

Months later, the singer was arrested again after a car crash, and police found him “drenched in sweat” with “eyes open and pupils dilated.” It was the singer’s seventh arrest in 12 years. The penalty: four weeks in prison. During this time he came loudly James Gavin not rid of GHB.

“For Michael, GHB seemed like heaven sent,” writes Gavin. “Aside from fueling his sexual compulsions, it made a depressed and self-loathing man feel attractive. It brought joy where there was little.”

It goes on to say that the musician also got on the drug while in prison: “GHB gave him confidence on Hampstead Heath and that intimidated the sexy escorts. But it also took him to a frightening new level of self-destruction. For example, GHB is more addictive than meth and riskier in all forms.”

The drug also fueled Michael’s nine-year relationship with British porn star and escort Paul Stag. “Michael paid him both for sex and for getting his new favorite drug, GHB,” Gavin writes. They reportedly had a code word for that: “In text messages, they called it ‘champagne.'”

Paul Stag smuggled the liquid drug in small shampoo bottles to George Michael, who mixed GHB in his coke. “All of a sudden,” Stag recalls himself in the new book, “Michael said, ‘I’m ready now. Let’s have sex.’” But the drug also made the world star aggressive, according to his ex-flame.

In 2014, the “I Want Your Sex” singer was found unconscious in his bathtub. A GHB overdose. According to the book, not George Michael’s first. He then went to Switzerland for withdrawal. But when he returned to England in 2016, “he quickly fell back into old patterns”.

He was finally found dead at his home in Oxfordshire on Christmas Day. Official cause of death: heart failure.
