The Danish heir to the throne celebrates his 54th birthday on May 26th – we look back.

The year 2022 has many beautiful moments in store for the Danish royals: Queen Margrethe of Denmark celebrated her 50th anniversary of the throne in January and her 82nd birthday in April. Mary of Denmark turned 50 in February, daughter Isabella also celebrated her birthday in April – her 15th. The twins of Mary and Frederik were also a year older: In January it was Happy Birthday for the eleventh time. And on May 26 there is another reason to be happy, because Margrethe’s older son, Crown Prince Frederik, will be 54 years old. Just in time for this occasion, it is worth taking a look at the life of the heir to the throne – at high points and low valleys.

Frederik of Denmark: Love is his greatest gift

Life was definitely kind to Crown Prince Frederik: today’s birthday child has a large family, leads a privileged existence and is healthy. All things for which the royal is certainly grateful. However, Frederik’s best present has been with him for quite a while: In 2000, “Fred from Denmark” (in German: “Fred from Denmark”), as he imagined himself at the time, met his great love Mary. Four years later, the native Australian says “yes” to her prince, four children together crowned her happiness. In autumn, after Prince Christian (16), daughter Isabella (15) also leaves the nest, while the twins Vincent and Josephine (11) are still attached to their parents. When Frederik is not attending to his royal duties or his family, the crown prince can usually be found out in nature. Whether on a mountain bike, in jogging shoes or on the handball field – the family man loves to give full throttle when it comes to sports.

Crown Prince Frederik: Sport is his great passion

Four years ago, the Crown Prince turned his passion for running into a major event: Every summer, the “Royal Run” takes place, in which thousands of Danish citizens run up to ten kilometers. As a sports enthusiast, Frederik can’t help jogging himself. And his children are also at the forefront of the event. Mama Mary is also quite fit – and the family likes to look for a sporting challenge together. In addition, the brother of Joachim from Denmark (52) likes to ride his mountain bike through the forest, play handball or go diving. Going to his physical limits: for the mid-fifties, the best balance to his royal duty. And certainly also a good opportunity to think about things that are bothering him.

Frederik of Denmark: He has a “complicated” relationship with his brother

Even if Frederik and Joachim are less than two years apart: the two brothers were not always of the same heart. Joachim in particular is said to have often found it difficult to grow up in the shadow of his big brother and the heir to the throne. His statements about his “complicated” relationship with his brother caused a stir in the Danish royal family, but since Joachim suffered a stroke almost two years ago, things are said to have calmed down. If Frederik has learned one thing in his role as crown prince, it is that as a blue-blooded person you lead a different and very special life – and that you can always achieve more with solidarity. Even when his father Prince Henrik (†) died in 2018, the family stayed close together and was united in mourning. Today the Danish royals can shine together again!

For his birthday: the palace publishes a special photo

In keeping with Prince Frederik’s day of honor, the palace shared a new portrait of the royal birthday child on Instagram – and so Royal fans rarely see Frederik. Wearing a gray jacket and checked shirt, he looks into the distance with a serious expression. “It’s His Royal Highness the Crown Prince’s birthday and he’s turning 54 today,” says the snapshot, which the followers are apparently enthusiastic about. The birthday post was linked more than 25,000 times in a very short time.
