Nobody expected that: Bayer 04 Leverkusen have extended the contract of striker Patrik Schick (26) by a further two years. With this, the club and the player, who was part of many speculation about changes, send a strong signal.
He has extended his contract in Leverkusen: top scorer Patrik Schick.
His name has been associated with various top clubs. But now Bayer 04 have sent an unmistakable signal to the outside world: Patrik Schick will stay with the Campions League participant, at least for the coming season.
On Thursday, the club announced the extension of the contract, which originally ran until 2025, by two more years until the summer of 2027. A coup that underscores the announcements by managing director Fernando Carro and sports director Simon Rolfes that Schick will not leave the club this summer and that any interested parties could save themselves calls, without any room for interpretation.
“Patrik Schick played a fantastic season and demonstrated absolute world class in his position. There are only a few center forwards of his stature internationally,” said sporting director Simon Rolfes. “In addition to Patrik’s exceptional sporting qualities as a full-fledged striker, there are also the skills of a leader who gives a team orientation and support on the pitch. The extension of a contract with a professional in his category underlines the ambition that we all have under Bayer’s cross.”
Schick’s commitment to Bayer, which should certainly be associated with a hefty salary increase, but not with an exit clause, is important for the factory club, which not only wants to keep the young and highly talented squad together, but also wants to strengthen it further.
“Renewing with such a player is an expression of our ambitions and a clear sign that Bayer 04 Leverkusen will continue at the top level even after my departure. That’s exactly what I promised on the last Bundesliga matchday in the stadium,” he said the outgoing sports director Rudi Völler, who will hand over his office to Rolfes on July 1, quotes. “For me, Patrik Schick is currently one of the best center forwards in the world.”
A clear signal from Bayer
The fact that Schick, who scored 24 goals in 27 league games last season, is staying and above all documenting this is a strong signal both internally and externally. After all, the Czech national player, who came to Leverkusen from AS Roma in 2020 for a fee of 27.5 million euros, with his extraordinary quota in the Bundesliga and his five goals at the European Championship in summer 2021, when he shared the goal with Portuguese Cristian Ronaldo scored the most goals, played absolutely in focus.
It’s a lot of fun with these guys and we really want to tear something up.
“I just feel good here,” says Schick, “but above all, our team is a promise for the future. It’s a lot of fun with these guys and we’re really keen on doing something real. Qualifying for the champions League is a good next step. A lot is possible here, which is exactly why I have extended at Bayer 04.”
Bayer has thus kept a player who came close to world class in Leverkusen last season and has since been mentioned in the same breath as the winner of the Golden Shoe Robert Lewandowski and Erling Haaland and did not give it up as so often in the past or have to give up. A clear signal that Bayer wants to continue attacking in the future.
